Football: Wise ‘a good bet to go all the way’ FOOTBALL: Round-up of the national and local scene.

A lot of clubs won’t let managers do that, but it

was important that I could run the club my way.

. We had to go down

a different route.”

Wise feels he has yet to learn the full intricacies of the

management trade.

Carson, a five-time champion jockey, said: “We’ve already

seen one manager from Swindon become England manager when Glenn Hoddle

did it and now I think we might be starting off another one.

It will be Wise’s second stint as a player-manager after he

guided Millwall to the 2004 FA Cup final, which they lost 3-0 to

Manchester United, as well as UEFA Cup involvement in the following

Carson said: “Iffy is a very intelligent man and I hope he can

walk into another job somewhere else.

“There are lots of people who will help me if I need any

advice. By Andy Tilley

SWINDON player-manager Dennis Wise is an England coach of the

future, according to County Ground chairman Willie Carson.

Gustavo Poyet, a former colleague of Wise’s at Chelsea, has

also registered as a player for next season after being installed as

assistant coach on a three-year contract.

“It’s true Micky Adams wanted me to stay at Coventry but

how long was I going to play on for?

The 39-year-old insists he still has plenty to learn, but Carson is

backing Wise to eventually coach the national side.

But Carson also took time out to reflect on the fate of previous

manager Iffy Onuora, who was shown the door after the Robins’

relegation into League Two at the end of last season.

He said: “I was player-manager for 19 months at Millwall and

in that time we got to the FA Cup final and went into Europe.

“We have seen how positive and enthusiastic Dennis is about

the whole thing and he is going to have people working hard here.”

“He came in as manager at a very bad time for the club and at

a time when he was starting out on his management career. Swindon’s new management team of Dennis Wise and

Gus Poyet. But the bottom

line is we got demoted.

“There were one or two other things open to me, but it felt

right coming here.”

“I’m going to have control over the whole club up to a

certain point. For instance, Dave Bassett has offered his services if I need

any help on the scouting front.

Former England, Wimbledon, Chelsea, Leicester, Millwall,

Southampton and Coventry midfielder Wise took charge at Swindon on a

three-year contract yesterday.

“If I wasn’t winning races when I was a jockey I would

have been sacked and the same principle applied here
